Gjevillvatnet – A paddling gem in magnificent surroundings
Canoeing on Gjevilvatnet is one of the most beautiful nature experiences you can have in Oppdal. This long mountain lake lies peacefully in the heart of Trollheimen, surrounded by majestic peaks and calm shores. Along the way, you can stop at the sandy beach of Rauøra for a break or a swim, or paddle along the shoreline to find your own little spot in nature. Gjevilvatnet offers open and magnificent mountain waters, tranquility, and fresh mountain air – perfect for both beginners and experienced paddlers who want to experience the mountains from the water.
Access and arrival: There is a road all the way to the lake. Drive west from Oppdal town center (Rv70). Continue to Festa and turn right toward Osen and Gjevilvassdalen. In Osen, there are good spots for launching your canoe.
Important: Gjevilvassveien is a toll road and requires payment.
Gjevilvatnet is a regulated mountain lake used for hydropower production, which means that the water level can vary significantly throughout the year. Although the regulation affects the shoreline and can at times make it challenging to launch a canoe or boat in certain areas, paddling and outdoor activities are still fully possible. It’s a good idea to check the water level in advance, especially early in the season.

Canoeing in mountain lakes
Remember that these are mountain lakes. The water can be cold even in summer, and the wind can pick up quickly. Be well prepared – bring dry clothes and start your paddling early in the day. Stay close to shore if you’re uncertain about the conditions.
Paddling alone is recommended only for experienced paddlers. Always wear a life jacket and other safety gear – even small mountain lakes demand respect.
