From the sun-exposed cliffs at Ishol to the modern Krux Climbing Center in the town center, there are challenges for climbers of all levels. With well-secured routes, diverse terrain, and breathtaking natural surroundings, Oppdal is an excellent destination for both beginners and experienced climbers.

Popular Climbing Spots in Oppdal

Ishol Climbing Crag – Historic and Varied

Ishol Climbing Crag, located by the Driva River in Lønset, is Oppdal’s oldest and most popular climbing area. The crag features a variety of routes ranging from grade 4 to 8a+ and is equipped with bolted routes, parking, and a fire pit. The south-facing walls dry quickly, making Ishol an ideal spot for climbing early in the season.

  • Season: April to October
  • Difficulty Level: Beginner to expert (4–8a+)
  • Facilities: Bolted routes, fire pit, parking
  • Practical Info: Climbers must bring their own gear and should be accompanied by someone experienced in outdoor climbing.

Krux Climbing Center – In the Heart of Oppdal

When the weather isn’t ideal for climbing outdoors, Krux Climbing Center in Oppdal town center is the perfect alternative. The center offers over 550 m² of climbing space, with walls ranging from 11 to 25 meters high. For the longest routes (25 meters), a 60-meter rope is recommended.

Krux also features a large bouldering area and challenging routes graded from 4 to 9, providing opportunities for climbers of all skill levels.

  • Top rope & lead climbing: 550 m², walls between 11 and 25 meters
  • Bouldering: A variety of problems suitable for all levels
  • Safety Requirements: Top rope climbing requires a Toprope Card, and lead climbing requires a Brattkort (Norwegian lead climbing certification)
  • Equipment Rental: Climbing shoes and harnesses available for rent
