About 8 kilometers south of Oppdal center, you’ll find the idyllic Ekrann Farm, a traditional farm deeply rooted in Norwegian agricultural history. The current owners, Hanna and Steffen, manage the farm with great dedication and passion, producing beef from the robust Tiroler Grauvieh breed and cultivating the highly sought-after mountain almond potatoes. The farm also features Gardsbua, a charming farm shop where you can buy products directly from the source. Potato sales start in September and usually last until around March, while meat is available year-round, although with some variation in selection. Occasionally, Gardsbua also offers products from other local food producers in the area.
Ekrann Farm is currently run by the 14th generation, and both Hanna and Steffen take their responsibility to continue the farm’s rich resources very seriously. They place great emphasis on efficient resource utilization, quality at every stage of production, and safe, secure food. For them, it is important that consumers develop a close relationship with where their food comes from—straight from the heart of the mountain village.
The livestock at Ekrann Farm consists of Tiroler Grauvieh, an old cattle breed from Tyrol in Austria, known for its hardiness, strong legs, and hooves, making it ideal for grazing in the steep terrain of Vinstradalen. Here, on the lush pastures up to 1200 meters above sea level, the animals spend the summer. The Tiroler’s excellent maternal qualities, with ample milk and care for the calves, result in both harmonious animals and impressive slaughter weights.
The Oppdal region is blessed with perfect climatic conditions for growing almond potatoes, where the dry, sandy soil gives the potatoes their distinctive, flavorful quality. Hanna and Steffen oversee the entire process—from planting to harvesting, sorting, and packaging—to ensure that every bag of potatoes leaving the farm meets the highest quality standards.
Feel free to visit Gardsbua at Ekrann Farm—it’s open 24/7 and self-service, always ready to offer the farm’s fresh products. Hanna and Steffen are happy to answer any questions you may have and warmly welcome you to stop by.
