Guided Tour – Vang Burial Ground

⚠️ Important Notice

The burial ground at Vang is temporarily closed due to cleanup work and the preservation of the cultural heritage site following storm Amy.

We apologize for the inconvenience and hope the area will be open for visitors again by summer 2026.

Did you know that Norway’s largest Viking Age burial ground is in Oppdal? Just a short walk from the town centre, you’ll find Vang Burial Ground, a unique cultural heritage site with nearly 800 burial mounds from the late Iron Age and Viking Age – and one of the best-preserved burial sites in Northern Europe.

The area dates back to both the Migration Period (ca. 400–600 AD) and the Viking Age (ca. 800–1000 AD), and offers fascinating insights into Oppdal’s role as a hub for trade and travel between the mountains and the fjords. Archaeological finds, including Irish bronze artefacts and weapons, show signs of long-distance contact and an active local society.
