Kongsvold Fjeldstue and Dovre

Experience Hjerkinnhøe in winter with a beautiful ski trip through Dovrefjell’s spectacular high mountain landscape. “Hjerkinnhøe Rundt” is a loop of approximately 20 km, suitable for both experienced hikers and families accustomed to winter outdoor life. You can also complete a 30 km round depending on which trails you combine. The trails are marked with plastic sticks and regularly groomed by snowmobile, making them easier to follow even under challenging snow conditions.

The trip offers panoramic views of Snøhetta, Rondane, and Drivdalen, as well as the chance to see musk oxen and wild reindeer in their natural habitat. The terrain varies from exposed mountain plateaus, which can be windy, to lower, more sheltered areas with birch forest.

You can start at either Kongsvold Fjeldstue or Hjerkinn Fjellstue, as the trails are in the area between them. You can choose to ski only from one Fjellstue to the other, or complete the entire loop – depending on transport.

Tips for the trip:

  • The weather changes quickly in Dovrefjell during winter. Be prepared – bring warm and sufficient clothing, gloves, and ski goggles.

  • Navigation is important – use a map or GPS in addition to trail signs.

  • Consider snow and avalanche conditions before the trip. Check Varsom.no.

You may combine the ski trip with a guided safari, which might give you the chance to spot musk oxen! Oppdal Safari for more information.

Remember the right of public access – Dovrefjell is home to wild reindeer and musk oxen. Show consideration and respect.

  • Local guidelines may apply for winter travel, especially in wild reindeer areas or protected areas.
