Shelters in Oppdal

Summer or winter, what's better than crawling into a cozy gap hut, gathering around the fire and eating your lunch with friends and family?

Here we have created a short and simple guide to a selection of gap huts in Oppdal. These are tours that are available and suit the vast majority of people.

Kåsrandin and Landlaupet – with a panoramic view of Oppdal

From the car park in Kåsen, follow the well-marked and signposted path up through the pine forest. After 1 km you pass the homestead of Ola Kåsen (1868 – 1952). He was the last uplander who lived only by hunting, trapping and fishing. The path continues up along the forest and crosses a road. Here the old saddle road is followed for approx. 600 meters up to a junction where there are several signs and information boards. Turn right and follow the signs for Kåsrandin. Here it is 250 meters up to gapahuk.

Tip: A little beyond the gapahuken on Kåsrandin there are nice trees to hang your hammock and spend a night in nature.

If you follow the path further south, through fine mountain forest, you will eventually reach Landlaupet. The trip is a circular route and you follow the path called Mjøastigin M7.

Elgtjønna

Elgtjønna is nestled in Kåsen, and is easily accessible for everyone. Around Elgtjønna, campfire and seating areas have been created, as well as gap huts. The gravel path goes all the way around the water, and is perfect for prams, wheelchairs and children's bikes. The trees goes all the way to the water's edge and Elgtjønna is an exciting place for children! From here you can also go on to other paths and marked routes in the Kåsen hiking area, which has a path for everyone.

Ålmstigen – circular track in the middle of the city centre

The trail starts at Sagtunet in Inge Krokann road. The path runs along the river Ålma in gentle and friendly terrain. Here there are good opportunities for both prams and wheelchairs. Gapahuken is located along the path and is a favorite with families with children. Here there are opportunities to grill and seek shelter from the weather.

Gapahuken in Dindalen

Parking at the top barrier after Blokkhus. Follow the road into the valley and enjoy the surroundings. On the way you also pass Dindalshytta (TT) and Uvssetra. The trip is suitable for cycling in the summer and skiing in the winter. Gapahuken is idyllically located close to the river and there is a prepared campfire.

Setervasskogen – Gapahuk with historical buzz

Gapahuken in Setervasskogen is a nice hiking destination in both summer and winter. In winter, you follow the trodden ski track that runs from Lønset school and into Storlidalen. In the summer you also start at Lønset school, cross the sports field and then follow the farm road up to Horvlia. Here you walk through the farmyards and onto the old Storlidalsvegen, which you follow all the way to the gapahuk.

On one wall of the gap hut, a glass cross has been designed. The decoration faces the memorial stone for the medieval church that has stood in the area. In the middle, a bonfire has been made, covered with slate stones that were found in the old quarry where the hiking trail runs.

Gapahuken by the Lønset light trail

Child-friendly and a short trip to gapahuken, which is located right next to the light trail on Lønset. Here you can spend a night in nature; bring a hammock, pitch up among the pine trees and enjoy the silence. You will also find a fire pan and outdoor equipment here.

Guriberget

The trip to Guriberget starts at the ski lift in Stølen and is a popular trip in both summer and winter. Parking at the start of the trail, a little further east of the ski center's parking lot.For 1.5 km you follow a nice and flat carriage road. At gapahuken, it is child-friendly and nice to explore nature. Here there is also a fire pan that can be used, but remember to bring your own wood.

Vålån gapahuk

This is an easy short walk with good signposting. The trip starts down Stasjonsvegen and on through the railway underpass. Here you continue on the nature trail to Vålån gapahuk. Along the path there is information about pine forests and wildlife, as well as traces of coal mines and tar burning.

Funfact: The name Vålån – a vålå is a large grove of strangewood: It is probably the pile of wood that was put up here in connection with the keel burning, which is the origin of the place name Vålån. The place was also used as a storage place for timber in the old days when timber was floated in the river Byna.

Svarthaugen

The trip to Svarthaugen gapahuk is an excellent hiking destination in summer and winter, and is suitable for all ages. The walk to the gaphuken itself is not that long and demanding, so even the smallest legs can get there.

Fancy a longer trip? Take the trip up to Svarthaugen in the same loop with a lovely view.
