Vårstigen

Walk in the footsteps of kings, pilgrims, and merchants along one of Norway’s most historic travel routes.

Vårstigen takes you through birch forest and along stone-paved paths, with views over the Drivdalen valley and traces of the past around every bend.

Vårstigen is a dramatic and scenic section of the King’s Road – the ancient route that once connected southern and northern Norway through Drivdalen. For centuries, this path was used by royalty, pilgrims, and everyday travelers. Today, it’s been restored as a hiking trail, clearly marked and with informative signs that provide insight into the area’s rich cultural history.

The hike begins at Gammelholet, 3 km north of Kongsvold Fjeldstue, and gradually climbs through beautiful birch woods before leveling off near Tingsvaet at approximately 1000 meters above sea level. From here, you get breathtaking views of the Dovrefjell mountains and the cultural landscape of Drivdalen.

The trail is moderately demanding and suitable for hikers in average physical shape. It stretches about 6–9 km one way and typically takes 2–3 hours depending on pace. The total elevation gain is about 400 meters.
